How Long Does a Windshield Chip Repair Actually Take?

About thirty minutes for one chip, start to finish. Add roughly ten minutes for each additional chip on the same windshield. And there is no waiting period afterward. When it is done, you drive.

That last part is the one people do not expect, because it is the opposite of a windshield replacement.

Where the Thirty Minutes Goes

• Inspect and clean, about 5 minutes. Confirm the chip is actually repairable, check the type and how far any legs have run, and clean the area so nothing gets sealed under the resin.
• Vacuum, 5 to 10 minutes. A bridge tool mounts over the impact point and pulls the air and moisture out of the void. This is the step that decides how good the result is, and it is the one that gets rushed by people in a hurry.
• Injection, 5 to 10 minutes. Resin goes in under pressure and is worked out to the boundaries of the damage, including down each leg on a star or combination break.
• UV cure, 1 to 2 minutes. Ultraviolet light hardens the resin so it bonds with the glass.
• Polish and final check, about 5 minutes. The surface is leveled flush and the repair is looked over in good light.

Star breaks and combination breaks sit at the longer end of those ranges because the legs take more time to clear and fill properly. A clean fresh bullseye is often the quick end.

No Cure Time, No Restrictions

This is where repair separates from replacement. When a windshield is replaced, the glass is bonded in with urethane adhesive that has to cure before the windshield reaches full strength. Shops typically tell you not to wash the car and to be careful with door slams for 24 to 48 hours.

Chip repair has none of that. The resin is fully cured by the UV lamp before Patrick packs up. You can wash the car, run the air conditioning at the glass, slam the door, and drive the interstate the same afternoon. There is nothing left to set.

The Time It Actually Costs You

Thirty minutes is the work. The number that matters to you is how much of your day it takes, and with mobile service that is usually close to none of it.

Going to a shop means driving there, waiting or arranging a ride, waiting for the work, and driving back. For a half hour repair that is easily a two hour errand, and it has to fit in business hours.

Patrick comes to wherever the car already is. Your driveway, the lot at work, the parking area at the marina. You do not need to be standing there while he works, and you do not need to move the car. Most people hand over the keys or just leave it unlocked and go back to what they were doing.

Getting on the Schedule

Same day is common, especially if you call in the morning. We work Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday by appointment.

Weather is the one thing that moves an appointment. The glass needs to be dry to bond properly, so a heavy afternoon storm can push a job to the next slot. In a Florida summer that is worth knowing when you plan the day.
