The Two Numbers That Decide Most of It
Almost every call comes down to size and location. These are the working rules a technician actually uses.
For a chip. If a quarter covers the whole thing, there are good odds it can be repaired. Star breaks get a little more room, up to about a half dollar measured tip to tip.
For a crack. Roughly the length of a dollar bill. Past that, resin cannot reliably hold the glass together and you are looking at a replacement.
Location overrides both. Damage within about two inches of the edge of the glass, or sitting in the driver's direct line of sight, is judged more strictly no matter what size it is.
